Steven is co-founder of Basestation. Basestation is one of the many hats he wears, along with Systems Director at TechnologyWise, STEM Wana Trust board member, resident maker at Tinkd Makerspace and owner of GoTo Car Share (to name a few), so it’s surprising he hasn’t set up permanent camp here.
In his rare downtime, Steven can be found propagating houseplants (many of which can be found adorning every spare surface at Basestation), keeping up his fitness and spending time with family.
We nabbed Steven as he was sitting down to enjoy a vegan sandwich and oat milk coffee to find out what makes him tick …
What are the three words that best describe you?
Curious, practical, and systematic.
When did you know that you were interested in entrepreneurship?
From a young age I was selling and making deals. I didn’t know at the time that I was being entrepreneurial, but problem solving and coming up with solutions has always been something that has driven me and continues to this day.
What’s the most unique/interesting/odd talent you have?
I started my career in accounting and worked as a Chartered Accountant for many years.
What has been a personal or professional achievement that you’re proud of?
I’m proud of my most recent venture, it’s been a real journey for me, but I have really enjoyed the process. The goal of GoTo Car Share is to help businesses reduce pool vehicles, capital expenditure, ongoing maintenance costs, and free up car parking spaces. These are challenges that all modern cities are faced with and I’m excited to be a part of the solution.
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Toast with mashed bananas for lunch - it’s a classic combination.
What do you enjoy most about being at Basestation?
The social events that we host for residents are always great to be a part of. When residents get together and conversations flow, sometimes those interactions trigger a new collaboration or partnership. That’s the reason we started Basestation and that’s the reason I love coming to work every day.
What’s your favourite inspirational quote?
“Information flow is what the Internet is about. Information sharing is power. If you don't share your ideas, smart people can't do anything about them, and you'll remain anonymous and powerless.” – Vint Cerf, ‘Father of the Internet’
What would you like to be better at doing?
Some people would claim that I need to be better at working on my compulsion to “bulk buy” everything.
What other projects or plans do you have coming up?
Juggling three businesses as well as serving on several governance Boards keeps me very busy, I don’t have the time or the energy to take anything else on! But, never say never.
