Where were you born and where did you grow up?
I was born in Lower Hutt, just outside Wellington. Our family lived in a hillside subdivision, so the daily bike ride to school was a mix of joy and endurance—a quick 30-minute glide downhill in the morning but a tough hour-long slog back uphill every afternoon. Those rides probably taught me resilience (and the importance of good gears)!
What did you want to be when you were younger
An architect. I enjoyed science and technical drawing, however I wasn’t encouraged to continue with these by teachers as my school didn’t have good grades to give out for these subjects…thankfully times have changed.
If you had to pick three words to describe yourself, what would they be?
Connector, Creative and Adventurous.
Do you have an odd talent you can share with us?
I’m a qualified Power Yoga Teacher.
What has been your greatest personal achievement to date?
Building a happy, thriving family life with my wife and two kids here in Tauranga.
If you could eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Lasagna...or maybe combination fried rice.
What do you enjoy most about being at Basestation?
The community and collaboration (and coffee!). Being surrounded by creative, driven people sparks ideas and makes work feel less like work.
What’s your favorite inspirational quote?
“The best way to predict the future is to create it”
What would you like to be better at doing?
Languages. I didn’t get a strong grounding in English grammar growing up, and it’s made learning other languages a challenge. I’d love to be fluent in at least one other language someday.
Who do you look up to and why?
There are many designers I admire for their ability to create timeless, impactful products, buildings, and spaces. Thomas Heatherwick, for example—have you ever been on the modern Routemaster in London? It’s such a brilliant blend of functionality and design. Then there’s Jony Ive, whose work with Apple transformed the way we think about technology, and Charles and Ray Eames, who redefined modern furniture and design. (I soooo shouldn’t have been an accountant).
On a more personal level, I also deeply admire an old colleague, Alberto Ibeas. He had this incredibly positive approach to everything and everyone he connected with—a true reminder of how much energy and optimism matter in life and work.

Meet Craig Williams, the newest member of the Basestation team. Craig has been part of our coworking community for many years and is very familiar with all the challenges of starting a business and the benefits of coworking. So, it was logical that when our esteemed leader decided to go for his “long walk” that Craig was the first choice to help cover and be Steven 2.0.
We sat down with Craig to find out more about him…
