Tell us a bit about Marshall Day Acoustics
The company started back in 1981 by Sir Harold Marshall and Chris Day. Sir Harold had made a name for himself in international concert hall design . He was also a professor of acoustics at Auckland University and had started his own acoustic consultancy practice - but needed support on this and so teamed up with Chris Day who had an engineering background.
Marshall Day today is the largest acoustic engineering firm in Aotearoa, New Zealand. They have offices in New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong and Europe. The work they do largely falls into three categories; environmental noise, building acoustics and room acoustics.
Environmental noise covers a range of issues: monitoring, predicting and reducing noise outside at locations such as construction sites, airports, motorways, ports (the team regularly visit Port of Tauranga) and concerts (some of their team went to the recent Coldplay concert for this reason!).
Building and room acoustics often means designing sound proofing or sound reducing solutions.
The team also works on projects that include predicting noise levels, monitoring them, making recommendations and providing solutions.
What does your team like about working at Basestation
The people who also work here at Basestation; they are like-minded and kindred spirits! There are other perks the Marshall Day team enjoy like the snacks, shared lunches and breakfasts once a month.
James and Ayla both say “there are some enthusiastic and passionate people here who are not afraid to get excited!”
How long have you been at Basestation
James joined Basestation 15 months ago and Ayla has only been with us since July.
Please give a short pitch for businesses/customers or a call to action - we'd love to help promote your mahi
If there’s something you can hear, that you’d rather not - get in touch! Marshall Day Acoustics
Finally, please tell us a little bit about your team in Tauranga
They have only really been a ‘team’ since July when Ayla joined. There are other offices that often come and visits, but here in Tauranga, it’s just Ayla and James.
They both confess that a lot of acoustic engineers come from musical backgrounds. James plays drums and Ayla sings (you can find them both on Spotify under their band names, Ayla Gold and Battle Circus). Having these shared interests means that they often geek out over things like odd-time signatures of Pink Floyd and Tool songs!
They also have other interests, Ayla enjoys the outdoors and is a keen runner, mountain biker and surfer. She’s also a total bookworm.
James is a family man with two teenage children, and two fluffy cats (a Maine Coon and a Ragdoll). He races cars in his spare time and runs a grassroots motorsport series called OKCup. He’s also the guy you want on your pub quiz team as he's known as a walking encyclopedia!)
