In our last post, we shared how Basestation came to life, transforming from an oversized office into a collaborative home for Tauranga’s creatives and entrepreneurs. Today, as Basestation celebrates its 10th anniversary, we look back at the journey since opening day. From quirky tech artifacts to local art, a beloved coffee shop, and spaces for makers, Basestation has evolved into a bustling community that continues to shape Tauranga’s CBD.

Building Community and Character

Since the early days, Basestation’s personality has only grown. Visitors often notice the array of vintage tech items lining the ground floor – from typewriters and early mobile phones to morse code machines and PCs. Each piece is a tribute to the rapid evolution of technology and a conversation starter, sparking memories of “first computers” or childhood gadgets. In practical terms, these relics now mark available desks for visitors and residents!

Adding to Basestation’s charm are artworks by local artist Murray Clode. On opening day with Startup Weekend, Clode created an interactive art piece, that still has centre place in the building. It visually maps the web of connections formed during the event, capturing the essence of what Basestation is about.  Over the years, more of Murray’s art has adorned the space, including the mural “Tangled” in the stairwell, adding vibrance and personality to an otherwise boring white wall.

Coffee, Connection, and Folk Café

In Tauranga’s coworking world, good coffee is practically essential, and Basestation struck gold with Folk Café. Nearly a year after Basestation opened, Steven met Hans, who was looking for a space for his coffee shop. By September 2015, Folk had moved in, transforming the reception area into a cozy café that quickly became a favorite for residents and visitors alike. Folk Café now draws a loyal crowd to Basestation, adding a dynamic vibe that’s become part of the community’s identity.

Expanding for the Future and Focus on Sustainability

In 2018, with a thriving community and rising demand, Basestation expanded to the first floor, creating offices for individuals and larger teams and adding three new shared meeting rooms. This expansion coincided with a bold decision by the founders: signing a long-term lease, securing Basestation as a cornerstone of Tauranga’s entrepreneurial ecosystem for at least two more decades. The team continued to grow, too, welcoming first Community Assistant Courtney, whose role has been pivotal in fostering Basestation’s welcoming and supportive environment in this still early days!

It was the time too where sustainable practices around waste, lighting, printing were fully implemented, further cementing some shared economy principles that grounded Basestation’s core values.

Basestation’s Makerspace and Growing Impact

As coworking evolved, so did the needs of Basestation’s community. In 2021, STEM Wana, a resident organization, launched Tinkd Makerspace in Basestation’s basement. Equipped with tools like a vinyl cutter and branding equipment, Tinkd empowers residents to add their own touch to the space. From signage on office doors to custom logos around the building, Tinkd has furthered Basestation’s commitment to creativity, community, and hands-on innovation.

Celebrating Resilience and Community Spirit

The COVID-19 pandemic tested every business, and Basestation was no exception. In a heartwarming show of support, longtime residents continued to pay for their spaces even during lockdowns, knowing that Basestation’s survival was vital to their own small businesses. This sense of solidarity among residents and founders kept Basestation resilient, ready to serve the community as restrictions lifted and remote work rose in popularity.

Today, Basestation remains a lively hub in Tauranga’s CBD, buzzing with activity from early morning coffee at Folk to events and evening maker sessions at Tinkd. Its enduring presence speaks to the founders’ dedication and the strength of Tauranga’s entrepreneurial spirit.

The Heart of Tauranga’s Entrepreneurial Community

Ten years in, Basestation’s impact has extended far beyond its walls, helping shape the entrepreneurial landscape of Tauranga and nurturing a supportive, collaborative community. With the rise of hybrid work and the revitalization of Tauranga’s city centre, Basestation is more relevant than ever – a space created by entrepreneurs, for entrepreneurs, where community and creativity thrive.

If you’re in the neighborhood, come by for a tour and a kōrero. We’d love to show you what makes Basestation so special. Find us at 148 Durham Street, Tauranga – the coffee’s on, and the community’s waiting.
